Veterans Recreation Department - VA Hospital
Friday, March 21, 2008

Paul Gray spoke before a large group of enthusiastic veterans at the Veterans Hospital. He was joined by Joel Hendrix who conversed with each veteran about their special needs. This luncheon was presented by the Recreation Department.

Paul spoke about our existing and upcoming programs. RISE is working with the VA in establishing weekly programs specifically for their constituency. We were presented with a variety of disabilities and their special needs about their participation. Most of the veterans that attended have contacted RISE individually and are becoming active in a number of our programs.

A special thank you goes out to Julie and Aimee for inviting RISE to help with their needs in providing weekly activities for their folks.

Baylor Rehab
Tuesday, February 12, 2008

On Tuesday February 19th Steve Carlson/RISE Outreach Director and Jackie Bartels/RISE Marketing Director attended an Outreach opportunity at Baylor Rehab. We passed out RISE flyers and talked with people who are newly injured about the opportunities that RISE has to offer and signed them up! There were several booths set up, all offering differnt types of sports such as golf, snow skiing, water skiing, quad rugby, and fencing. Most of the people there had already heard about RISE, so it was exciting to hear how they heard about our organization as well as their outdoor interests. The feedback from everyone was very positive and a sense of excited when they heard what RISE has to offer them.

RISE Speaks before POWER

17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
Monday, January 14, 2008

RISE participated with Frito Lay in celebrating MLK week on Monday, January 14th. An obstacle course was built at their corporate headquarters in Plano, Texas. Employees were asked to navigate the course while sitting in a wheelchair.

The first obstacle was opening a very small door and proceeding through it and then making sure it was completely shut. The next step was to go to a desk and pick up their items for a very important meeting they were late for. Navigating through cones they then arrived at another table where they placed the items on a desk. The participants then proceeded to a ramp built to simulate a curb. Only three employees were able to overcome this obstacle. The final step was to make it through a simulated small hallway with articles on the floor.

There was a large employee turn out and everyone had a new found understanding of what it is like to be in a wheelchair in the workplace. Thanks to all that participated and especially Frito Lay and PepsiCo for allowing RISE to further our mission by working with corporate America in the hiring of persons with disabilities.
