About Photography
The more straightforward aspect of the subject concerns ways by which physically impaired photographers can function more effectively. Improved access to the beauty spots, heritage sites, and activities that attract photographers is one. Many simple and often inexpensive devices—adjustable viewfinders, remote shutter-release attachments, camera clamps—can facilitate actual picture making. digital technology has eliminated troublesome operations like film loading and will undoubtedly bring further benefits.
Program Introduction
More contentious is the photographic representation of disability. The Disability Movement that emerged in the 1980s campaigned to replace the established (‘common-sense’) medical model of disability that focused on the cure or management of actual physical impairment with a social one emphasizing the disempowering effects of institutional structures, language, the built environment, and social attitudes; and concentrating on the need to change society in order to achieve equal treatment.
